Physical Therapy

The evaluation and treatment of skills as related to mobility.  Physical therapist examine each individual and develop a plan to promote the ability to move, restore function, prevent disability and improve developmental activities.  Common treatment and diagnosis include Cerebral Palsy, Torticollis, Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome, and developmental delay. 

GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENT

0-3 months

  • Lifts head off surface while on tummy
  • Turns head to right/left while on tummy
  • Rolls over front to back and back to front

3-6 months

  • Good head control
  • Crawls forwards on belly
  • Plays on tummy
  • Sits with support
  • Plays with feet when on back

 6-9 months

  • Creeps on hands and knees
  • Assumes a seated position unaided
  • Sits unsupported

9-12 months

  • Pulls self to stand
  • Walks while holding onto furniture
  • Takes 2-3 steps without support
  • Rolls a ball in imitation of an adult
  • Crawls up/down stairs

 18 months

  • Throws ball
  • Makes contact with ball, but not able to kick
  • Climbs onto/down from furniture without assistance

2 years

  • Walks smoothly and turns corners
  • Begins running
  • Walks up and down steps with support

3 years

  • Imitates standing on one foot
  • Climbs jungle gym and ladders
  • Pedals on tricycle
  • Walks up/down stairs alternating feet
  • Jumps in place with two feet together
  • Catches ball using body

4 years

  • Stands on one foot for up to 5 seconds
  • Kicks a ball forwards
  • Throws a ball overarm
  • Catches a ball that has been bounced
  • Able to hop on one foot

5 years

  • Able to walk up/down stairs without holding onto railing
  • Walks backward toe-heel
  • Jumps forward 10 times without falling
  • Skips forwards after demonstration
  • Catches a small ball using hands only
